In June 2015, a waste-sorting project was launched in Sarafand to raise awareness regarding waste disposal and reduce local dependence on landfill. The ultimate goal was removing the need for the local hazardous landfill site altogether.
The project was already covering 600 households (about 3,000 inhabitants) in Sarafand. Given the rapid acceptance and success of this program, the association’s small vehicle for door-to-door waste collection was no longer big enough to service the increase in subscribers. SEAL’s grant of the larger vehicle requested enabled the association to cover an additional 1,500 houses in a few months.
BEA, the project’s grantee, is also supported with small grants from UNDP, Care, UNICEF, GEF, and Search for Common Ground.
