Project Summary:
The Solid Waste Management (SWM) facility in Baadaran receives approximately 10 tons of commingled municipal solid waste (MSW) daily, with increased volumes during the summer season, and operates 8 hours per day. Waste is currently segregated to recover recyclables, produce compost or Compost-Like Output (CLO), and dispose of inert materials. However, outdated and non-functional equipment limits the facility’s efficiency and long-term sustainability.

Objectives:
This project aims to upgrade the facility through the procurement of essential machinery, enabling improved waste processing, higher recovery rates, and safer working conditions. The project is embedded within the local governance system, with municipalities and the Union of Municipalities responsible for management, oversight, and cost-sharing. Partnerships with local farmers for compost use and recycling companies for material collection will strengthen local circular economy practices. Community awareness activities will further promote waste sorting and environmental protection, ensuring sustained behavioral change.
Through these interventions, the project will enhance environmental protection, reduce landfill disposal, and provide a sustainable, locally managed waste management solution for 12 villages in the Shouf area.

Implementation Plan:
SEAL is approached to support funding the upgrading of the existing solid waste management facility through the purchase of needed materials and machineries mainly a Bobcat, Poclain Excavator, Waste Collection Truck and a Bag Opener.

Approx. 35,000 inhabitants of the 12 villages in the Upper Shouf area.
10 employees of the facility, of whom 30% are women.
