Description and Impact
Buzuruna Juzuruna, a local NGO established in 2018, operates a 20,000m2 farm in Saadnayel, Bekaa. This initiative focuses on cultivating a diverse range of ancestral seeds native to the region. These seeds are stored, distributed, or sold at cost to farmers in the area.
The farm's sustainable and organic practices include the use of self-produced compost, natural fertilizers, and pesticides. 20% of the produce is sold directly to individuals and at farmers’ markets, while the remainder is transformed into seeds. The association also plays a pivotal role in providing training in sustainable, organic, and chemical-free agriculture, creating a comprehensive and fully sustainable ecosystem.
Now, Buzuruna Juzuruna aims to extend its successful model to Mejdlaya, Zghorta, starting with a 5,080m2 piece of land generously offered for free. To facilitate this expansion, SEAL has taken the initiative to prepare the land, implementing essential infrastructure such as fencing, water irrigation systems, water tanks, and other necessary tools. The cultivation plan for the new land includes olive trees (already existing), figs, grapes, carob, pomegranate, and Za’atar.
In addition to its agricultural activities, Buzuruna Juzuruna envisions establishing a training center in Mejdlaya. To ensure a constant supply of electricity for this center, SEAL has funded the installation of solar panels. The training center will benefit local farmers by imparting knowledge and skills in sustainable agricultural practices.
