Description and Impact
The Jezzine/Ain Majdaline Municipality received a SEAL grant to enhance irrigation for apple and vegetable orchards in Jezzine and its surrounding areas. The project involved installing water tanks and drip irrigation systems connected to the Ain Majdaline water reservoir, built in 2022 with UNDP support. This initiative aims to improve water distribution efficiency, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and boost productivity.
The project included the installation of 200 water tanks, each with a 2,000-liter capacity, and 400 rolls of GR drip irrigation lines, each extending 400 meters. Each farmer received two rolls totaling 800 meters. The system ensures efficient water transport from the Ain Majdaline reservoir, reducing water waste and expanding the irrigated area by 15 hectares. Expected outcomes include a 20-30% increase in farmers' incomes and a 50% reduction in water loss.
The project builds on a history of successful grant management. In 2017, the Agricultural Services Cooperative Association in Jezzine (ASCA), affiliated with the Jezzine/Ain Majdaline Municipality, received a $30,000 SEAL grant to purchase agricultural machinery for processing and preserving unsold produce. In 2023, the cooperative received another SEAL grant to acquire 2.5 tons of potato seeds.
These prior grants were effectively managed, yielding positive impacts on the local agricultural community. The current project builds on these successes and is expected to further enhance
