Project Overview
In the village of Barka, agriculture is the primary source of income for most residents. However, limited water availability had significantly constrained farming activities. With improved access to water, the amount of cultivable land was expected to double, and fruit yields were projected to increase. Farmers in the area grow apples, cherries, and apricots, previously producing over 100 kg annually per beneficiary.
To address the water shortage, the Barka Municipality requested support from SEAL to complete a water collection lake in the Saint Youhanna Barka area. The land for the project is owned by the municipality.
Objectives
The project aimed to equip the lake to support farmland irrigation and promote sustainable agriculture. Enhanced water availability was expected to increase fruit production by at least 25%. Over time, the growth of newly planted trees would generate higher revenues, improve the financial stability of farmers, and enable expanded vegetable cultivation and more effective land use.
Implementation Completion Summary:
The project has been successfully completed. The water collection lake was constructed and fully equipped to provide reliable irrigation for local farmland, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.
The completed works include:
• Construction of a water collection lake with a capacity of 7,500 m³
• Installation of 3,900 meters of geomembrane and 3,900 meters of geotextile for water containment
• Installation of a 1.7-meter-high galvanized perimeter fence extending 170 meters to secure the site
• Setup of all necessary pipes, fittings, and accessories for efficient irrigation distribution.
