Efforts to Improve farm productivity and manage production costs were greatly constrained by the use of traditional (manual) shears which cost the farmers $60 per day. The introduction of mechanical pruning shears shifted this dynamic. The initial implementation of the program involved a group of these farmers who were trained to use the equipment. The average lifespan of the shears, which can be used for many types of fruits and vegetables is 5 to 7 years.
The Tree Pruning Shears investment was the second time SEAL had supported Baskenta Cooperative, after the construction of water pipes in 2010.
This farming cooperative also runs irrigation and beekeeping projects.
