SEAL funded the purchase of specialized equipment that allowed olive farmers to recycle olive pits by compressing them into bio coal.
Olives are the primary source of income in Tanbourit where olives are grown and sold, and olive oil soap is manufactured. Disposal of olive pits has become a major environmental problem with harsh consequences for the local economy and agriculture.
Recycling the pits not only produces a carbon-neutral energy source, but it also protects the groundwater and soil from contamination from the pits when left to decompose.
500 olive farmers and their families were the direct beneficiaries of this project. 14,000 residents of the Tanbourit area (which includes the surrounding villages of Maghdouche, Zghodraya, Mjeidel and Darb el Sim) benefited from an alternative, affordable, and efficient heat source.
