Project Aim
Objective:
To improve irrigation efficiency and ensure reliable water distribution to agricultural lands through the installation of a modern irrigation network, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting farmers' livelihoods.
Summary:
Sereel Municipality is seeking SEAL’s support to install a modern irrigation network that will improve the distribution of available water resources and address the inefficiencies of traditional irrigation practices. Although groundwater and seasonal springs are available, farmers currently rely on manual water transport, leading to significant water losses, increased production costs, and inadequate irrigation during the dry summer months.
The proposed intervention will establish a modern irrigation system using PVC/HDPE pipelines, valves, couplings, fittings, and other related accessories to deliver water efficiently to agricultural lands. The project will support the cultivation of a wide range of crops, including olives, citrus fruits, persimmons, saffron, stone fruits, avocados, vegetables, and other high-value agricultural products. The irrigation network will be installed on municipal land to ensure long-term accessibility and sustainability.
Expected Impact:
The project will improve irrigation efficiency by introducing a modern water distribution network, ensuring reliable irrigation for agricultural lands while reducing water losses by 40–60% and cutting water consumption to 3,000–4,000 m³/hectare. It will expand irrigated land from 30–40 hectares to 60–70 hectares without increasing overall water use.
The intervention is expected to increase agricultural production by approximately 2% and farmers' incomes by 20–30% through reduced irrigation and labor costs. It will strengthen food security, support the livelihoods of farming households, create employment opportunities, benefit an additional 30 direct beneficiaries, preserve green agricultural areas, and promote sustainable agricultural development for future generations.
Implementation Plan:
Procure and install the modern irrigation network, including PVC/HDPE pipelines, valves, fittings, and associated infrastructure on municipal land.
