The third project SEAL undertook with the Association for the Development of Rural Capacities (ADR) was a housing project for 80 fishermen and their families in Tyre that funded and covered all the plumbing expenses of the area.
The Tyre community of fishermen belongs to one of the most marginalized socio-economic groups in the country. Obsolete technology coupled with military security considerations limited the possibility of fishing near the seashore which resulted in serious overfishing. These families also have no access to health facilities or medical and retirement support plans.
The leakage of around 25,000 tons of fuel oil to the Mediterranean Sea in July 2006 from shelling created an ecological disaster, leaving thousands of Lebanese fishermen jobless and without any source of income.
The fishermen's small, old, and humid houses became overcrowded and doctors testified to the high levels of cold, asthma and rheumatism recorded in the old Tyre area.
