Women In The Workforce

Significant social barriers to women’s economic empowerment in Lebanon remain, and Lebanon has one of the lowest levels of women’s political participation in the world. 24% of the workforce is female, while only 18% of businesses are owned by women. According to the World Economic Forum in 2014, Lebanon has the 8th worst gender equality in the world and the 3rd worst in the MENA region (with only 3 women in parliament in 2008).

UN studies show that female labor force participation is an important driver of economic growth, and changes household spending in ways that benefit children. SEAL’s work in this area has focused on helping to launch women-led cooperatives, through the purchase of equipment and skills development.
